“This is the LORD’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.
This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:23-24, ESV)
Most of us have sung this verse…. but I just discovered I had it wrong… well my understanding of it at least. It was a catchy verse, and a catchy tune.
So we rejoiced in this day, today, that the Lord had made, in the sense that every day is a new day that God had created. We celebrated the creation of “this” day.
But when you look at the verse in its context, it has a completely different meaning and implication. It is not a day in the sense of 24 hours, but rather a day as a period of time.
It is the day of God’s salvation and of God’ grace for all who believe. However, for those who refuse to believe, it has become a day of judgment and day of disaster.
“So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,
‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone, ‘
and ‘a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.’
They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.” (1 Peter 2:7-8, ESV)
We either stand on the Rock, believe in Jesus, or that very same Rock will fall on us and crush us.
So instead of seeing the day as being part of God’s creation, this is the day of our NEW creation, the day we stood and now stand on the Rock. We believe in Jesus, and so we were saved.
This is the DAY we will rejoice in! It is the day of our freedom! We walk in the light of the DAY, and do not stumble in the dark.
YES!! Let us REJOICE!!! Let us be GLAD in it!
